Meet hundreds of funky, fun and friendly people this Saturday at Forte for free (Fort Lane)

It was a while in the making but this Saturday night at Forte is my 32nd birthday party. Everyone who receives my weekly guide is welcome, just RSVP to me (if you haven’t already) and I’ll pop you, and your guests, on the door-list.

Thursday started like any other, an autumn nip in the air, office duties and then it got really rather good. I was dined at lunch by a dashing young star at a restaurant I’d wanted to attend ever since moving here, and then the only love of my life came to mine for nibbles and vino. Others stopped by and things became heated (in a good way).

Wednesday April 9th

Retro Wednesday
The Pony Club, 55 Customs St, Auckland Central
No Charge. 10pm – 3am

Grant Marshall plays a mash of old, and even older, tracks to make hump day no so bad. It’s not packed but attracts a fine bunch.

And/Or
$4 Wednesdays
The Globe Bar, Darby St, Auckland Central
No Charge. 9pm – Late

Locals are picking up on this fun bar now too, so it’s half tourists and half Aucklanders. Always a super variety of songs (70’s to techno) to keep everyone happy, and the dancefloor rammed. Globe has cool stuff happening every night; have a look.

Thursday April 10th

Pendulum dance party
Logan Campbell Centre, 217 Greenlane West, Epsom
Presale tickets $75 from www.ticketmaster.co.nz 7.30pm – 2am

Pendulum are a drum and bass group originally from Perth, Australia (now the UK’s their home). Their live sound is intriguing due to its mass appeal, typically heavy beats accompanied by low, buzzing basslines, overlaid with synthesized leads. The venue moved here as the last one sold out in record time, this one will do the same. Be quick.

And/Or
Operation: S.H.O.P
Ruby Bar, 484 New North Rd, Kingsland
No Charge. 9pm – 1am

It’s a quirky bar on the far side of the Kingsland shops. The night will be a little crazy, but all the people will be more than friendly. Music will be varied, and there will be plenty of interesting things to look at.

Friday April 11th

Bacardi pres. DJ Recloose (3hr set)
Rakinos, Level 1, 35 High St, Auckland Central
Entry $10 on the door. 9pm – Late

Digi-funk hero, DJ Recloose, is back in the Rakinos booth to deliver a specially prepared set of old school gems and jams. His recent album release took flight on the charts, so this will be a very special night to enjoy at this very unique funky venue.

And/Or
Modulate dance party
Asta, 10 Victoria St, Auckland Central
Entry is $5 on the door. 10pm – 6am

Fresh on the success of their first event, they once again bring you Modulate. This time they have upped the stakes and added in a couple of local heavyweights to the bill to ensure your musical desires are fulfilled. Expect techtonic Tech House, engorging Electro House, and the baddest Breakbeat ever.

Saturday April 12th

Marty’s Guide pres. WINGS’n’WHEELS (Marty’s birthday party)
Forte Club, 2 Fort Lane, Auckland Central
No Charge. RSVP your name to me now to get on the doorlist. 10pm – 3am

Sure to be a very fun night. People of all sorts will be attending, some I’ve never met, but it’s all about meeting people, having fun and seeing what eventuates. 2 party zones, lasers, big-time DJ’s and it’s open to everyone who gets my guide. Maybe I’ll see you there then? I’ll be the tipsy one.

Sunday April 13th

George FM’s Free Parking outdoor dance party
Eric Armishaw Reserve, End of Walker Rd, Point Chevalier
No Charge. 1 – 6pm

Like last week’s Red Bull Daylight Savings party being the only thing to do on Sunday, this one’s the same. Bevan Keys is DJing the entire thing, somehow (mixed CD’s perhaps ;-)), so you will dance without fail. BYO everything and I’ll see you there, quite bleary eyed I imagine.

Monday April 14th

Movie Night: You The Living
Academy Cinema, City Library Building, 44 Lorne St, Auckland Central
Tickets $9 - $15. Book first on (09) 3732761. 8.30 – 10.15pm

It’s a series of ingeniously twisted anecdotal sketches. The bleak mundane miseries of modern existence are shown in dead-pan, but hilarious, ways. Very arty and a bit odd, but your frown lines of confusion will soon be replaced with laugh ones.

Tuesday April 15th

Interactive Quiz Night
The Kingslander, 470 New North Rd, Kingsland
No Charge. 7pm register for 7.30pm start.

As the days begin to chill what better place than the Kingsy on a Tuesday evening. Catch up with friends, get a couple of bowls of spicy wedges and rack your brains while learning things and having a superb time.

Wednesday April 16th

Loser (opening night)
Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, 50 Mayoral Dr, Auckland Central
Tickets $15 from www.ticketek.co.nz 8 – 10.30pm

Back after a sell-out run in 2007, Loser is part of the NZ International Comedy Festival 2008. This hilarious pitch-black comedy play tells a story of Glenwood High's ten-year reunion. It’s a tale of failed dreams, painful memories and revisiting high school traumas through the laugh-to-cringe experiences of six dysfunctional characters. I think we could all relate to some section of this show.  Great price and guaranteed fun.
