A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Important Notice: Before I start, a quick word about the upcoming changes to the anti-spam legislation. If for any reason at all you don't want to be on the Marty's Guide list, unsubscribing is very easy - you just click on the link at the bottom of this email, and then confirm you no longer wish to receive the guide. But don't forget... you'll be missing out! ;-)

. . .

I'm on this mega-happy streak at the mo, hence these feel good quotes. I've been doused in them for over a decade now by teachers, employers and friends who mean well, and now I am somehow taking heed, through alien impregnation I think. Could all this glee just be the very near onset of Spring? Either way, I'll take a lifetime supply please. It's amazing how far a 24/7 PMA can take you. Even if it's just landing a date with a person you've likes for ages, it's worthwhile. Don't you think?

Congratulations to Ivan Millan, Joanna McNeill and Grant Harveson, they saw The Warriors soar well above Manly Sea Eagles, and into 4th place on the NRL table. Home semi here we come. A bottle of that new sexy liqueur called Ecstasy will be popped and sipped on by both Carly Simpson, and Anna Magdalinos, this weekend. Brooke Frawley won the tickets to Famous but didn't collect, so Kristen Hannan swooped in. Jack Daniels would be proud; the worthy Peter Stanton won the 1125ml bottle with the correct answer of 1911. The double pass winners to Rhombus were Hannah Norton, Darren Imms, Miranda Harrison (thanks again for the beer btw), Charlotte Cull and Patrick McPherson.

Check below for details on all the events coming up this week, along with a selection of pix from the last week. And make sure you check out the website and read my weekly review, and view a bunch of new photos in the gallery section. Just go to http://www.martysguide.co.nz/.

Nike Shop, Victoria Park Market, Victoria St, Freemans Bay
No Charge. Meet 5.45, leave 6pm

It's social, and that's what we're all about. Join me as we plod, or plummet, around a choice of distances. You can even take brand new shoes for a complimentary test drive. Lucozade for all completes the event.

And/Or
All Drinks $4, All Night
The Globe Bar, Darby Street, Auckland Central
No Charge. 4pm - Late

You just been on the Nike run, shall we ruin all our good work and pop along here, just for 1? I think so. Even the top-shelf stuff is $4. Traditionally renowned as a bar for tourists/backpackers, The Globe attracts loads of locals to, and with these awesome events on I can see why.

Thursday August 30th

Apres Ski Party
Chapel Bar & Bistro, 147 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby
No Charge. 8pm - Close. RSVP to chapel.admin@xtra.co.nz

Wear anything related to skiing and you're bound to win a prize. My man MC Ben Baker will be as bold, brash and brassy as ever, and Mr Murry Sweetpants will be on the wheels of steel. Did I mention you receive an Ecstasy cocktail on entry. All together a great night I reckon.

And/Or
 Lady Soul Launch
PR Bar, 2 - 6 Ponsonby Road, Grey Lynn
No Charge. 10pm - 3am

Ladies get complimentary bubbles before 10pm. $3 Cruisers all night to keep you topped up. DJ Classic Daddy spins all your favourite 80s & 90s jams, with a blend of all the fresh new tracks. I'm told the karaoke machine may even get rolled out, if anyone's game.

Friday August 31st

Bungalow 8's 1st Birthday
Bungalow 8, Cnr Customs St W & Market Pl, Viaduct Harbour
No Charge. 4pm - Very Late

Has it really been a year (The Bungalow Boys began soon after this guide got cracking). If I know them, this won't be done by halves. All the best DJ's in town will spin and they go LIVE on George FM from 10pm. It'll be a who's who, so bring your camera. The first 100 guys and 100 girls get a complimentary birthday beverage.

And/Or
Playhouse Party
Flight Lounge, Fort Lane, Auckland Central
No Charge. 10pm - Late

It's the highest rating show on ALT TV. Why? Due to cute Katy and lovable Lee's jovial chemistry. Great music, sponsors and production to of course. Anyway, they are filming their party show live at The Flight Lounge from 10pm - 12am. If you want to get on TV, now's your opportunity.

Saturday September 1st

In The House
SpyBar, 204 Quay St, Viaduct Harbour
No Charge 10pm - 12am. $10 entry after. 10pm - 7am

With free entry and complimentary cocktails from 10 - 12 I'd get there early. Seasoned and skilled DJ's take you through the house motions all night. Percussion master Levani and jazz legend Lewis add their special touch.

And/Or
Minimal Offcuts feat. Phil Brokelmann
Fugu Sake Lounge, Blowfish Sushi, 144 Parnell Rd, Parnell
No Charge. 9pm - 3am

The match between Phil's music and Blowfish's style is bang-on. His fresh, worldly and precise tunes enable you to enjoy succulent sake and sushi with friends or get-on-down with your bad self up front.

Sunday September 2nd (Father's Day)

Hospitality NZ Expo begins
ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane Rd W, Greenlane
No Charge. Must register www.hospitalitynz.co.nz else $20. Some areas cost extra to enter. 10am - 5pm

Art, ice, billiards, food, coffee, lighting and everything in between. See and taste the future for NZ and the world. This will be big and interesting even if you don't drink or visit restaurants.

Monday September 3rd

The Real Thing (On until September 29th)
Silo Theatre, Lower Greys Ave, Auckland Central
Tickets $20 - $35 from www.ticketmaster.co.nz. 7 - 9pm

If you like sex, art, pop music and the politics of loving someone you'll enjoy this playful play. The main character, Henry, is a witty and slightly egotistical playwright, but can't master the art of love at all. He's cast as a philandering husband in a play, suddenly sophistication can't save him and he's forced to deal with his short-comings.

Tuesday September 4th

Nigel Brown Art Exhibition Opening
Warwick Henderson Gallery, 32 Bath St, Parnell
No Charge. 5.30 - 7.30pm

Nigel Brown is one of NZ's most instantly recognised artists. With his painterly and expressive style he has established a reputation as one of the most important artists working in NZ. I studied him, and his works at school, and can't wait to meet him.
