No time to rest and wallow, keep up the momentum!

Just because the “silly season” is officially over, it doesn’t mean that you should hang up your party shoes. You’ve had a month or so of fun and frolicking, why not let the good times roll? There are so many awesome events coming up in the first quarter of 08, you’d be mad to yawn and say, “I’ve done my dash!”

Twenty days ago I wrote my last confession to you all and if I was to re-cap on what’s been happening since I’d have you reading till Tuesday, but check out my first serving of editorial for 2008 and you'll hear about some of the highlights (click here).

I'll also be getting a big bunch of photo galleries on the site in the next couple of days, so drop by the website and have a perve at what's been going on ;-)

Godwana: Land Of The Giants (Exhibition Opens)
The Dome, Auckland Museum, The Auckland Domain, Parnell
Entry $7.50 - $15. Call (09) 3067098 to book, and for opening times

The show has thrilled audiences wherever it has performed in the world. It takes you back 80 million years when all the countries were joined together; an amazing land where plants were as tall as buildings and dinosaurs walked among gigantic dragonflies and ancient ocean dwellers. Performed in the Museum's flash new Dome it features spectacular full body puppets in a giant inflatable garden with huge projections, dramatic lighting and evocative sound-scapes.

And/Or
Heineken Men’s Open (Tennis Tournament, on till Saturday)

I like their clothing, service and style as a whole, so I thought I’d let everyone else know about this sale of theirs.

Friday January 11th

Global Summer Dance Festival
Ellerslie Racecourse, Ascot Ave, Ellerslie
Tickets $65 from www.ticketek.co.nz, Real Groovy or text GLOBAL to 858. 4pm – 6am

I think like last year one of the best bits will be sitting outside on the bean-bags in the inevitable sun early on. If you last that then wander inside and take your pick from any one of the 7 dance zones. Make sure you don’t miss Stonebridge and The Warp Brothers in the main room though.

And/Or
Sol’s Summer Party
Sponge Bar, 198 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby
No Charge. 5pm – Late

I worked for these guys over a year ago and haven’t been back since, but I think the time is right. Buy 1 Sol get another free all evening, then party in Ponsonby till the early hours to rocking dance favourites.

And/Or
Amp Fiddler, with DJ Recloose
Galatos, 17 Galatos St, Newton
Tickets $43.50 from www.ticketek.co.nz. 9pm – Late

This intergalactic keyboard king, vibe-full soul vocalist and multi- talented musical maestro is one out of the box. He’s been pumping out the rubbery funk and grown-man hip-hop from his Detroit Camp Amp studio, to fizzing worldwide acclaim for decades. With a CV the size of a telephone directory, it's almost easier to say who he hasn't worked with, but alphabetically speaking Prince, Primal Scream and Parliament are just some of the P's in The Fiddler's address book.

Saturday January 12th

The Great Fitzroy Mussel Festival
The Boat Club, Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island
No Charge. 11am – 8pm. Book ferry (& accommodation if needed) in advance on 0800 AUCKLAND

Thousands are expected to flock to the usually quiet Great Barrier Island to dine on the fresh mussels farmed locally. The crowds bring a spectacular vibrancy to the island with hundreds of boats, music, cheer and celebration. The focus of course is on the mussels prepared in every way possible, but while you're there don’t forget to explore what makes the island so special, i.e. white sand beaches, dense native bush, local art and crafts, diving and fishing charters and a network of walking tracks.

And/Or
Music In The Parks: Kantuta
Jellicoe Park, 131 Trafalgar St, Onehunga.
No Charge. 6 – 9pm

I used to listen to the internationally renown, 5 piece Latin American salsa band Kantuta at outdoor concerts when I was a boy. I am not missing this opportunity and neither should you.

And/Or
Our House: Summer Sessions
Embassy Lounge, 608B Port Rd, Whangamata
Tickets $10 on the door. 10pm – Close

Oh to be a DJ. Tim Phin, Karn Hall and Cam Robertson are on tour going to all the hip holiday spots to party hard. This Saturday sees them at Whanga. They bring the big city flavour to a club that rarely gets to feel the full force of party central. Together with local DJ’s they create an 8 hour storm that you will want to be a part of, if at all possible.

Sunday January 13th

James Paver and Kahu
The Kingslander, 470 New North Rd, Kingsland
No Charge. 3 -6pm

They have the odd original song but most are sweet covers. It’s an ad-lib roller-coaster show which you can interact with or just enjoy them strumming away in the background. Head along hungry as there is a mean BBQ on offer for $10 during the performance.

Monday January 14th

Go see the movie: I Am Legend
Most cinemas
Tickets $8.50 - $14.50

An adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel stars Will Smith as scientist Robert Neville, a lone survivor of a vampire virus, who keeps busy by preparing for a nightly attack in a deserted New York City. The film contains one of the most expensive scenes ever filmed, where the Brooklyn Bridge gets destroyed to isolate Manhattan Island from the mainland. It succeeds due to some good thrills and a super performance from Smith, but flirts with predictability at the end.

Tuesday January 15th

The Wind In The Willows
The Pumphouse, Killarney St, Takapuna
Tickets $17.90 from www.tix.co.nz or call (09) 4898360

I think everyone has seen some sort of adaptation of this classic children’s tale. The show takes place in the natural surroundings around The PumpHouse, and the audience follows the adventures of Toad, Mole, Ratty, Otter and Badger as they move around the locations of Killarney Park and Lake Pupuke; bringing the story to life with plenty of surprises. During the play the audience interacts with the story’s characters as they try to find the perfect spot for a picnic, laugh at Toad's obsession with the motorcar, and then help them rid Toad Hall of the nasty Weasels.

And/Or
Billy Bragg
Leigh Sawmill Café, 142 Pakiri Rd, Leigh
Tickets $47.50 from www.ticketek.co.nz or Leigh Sawmill. But they are very scarce. 9pm – 11.30am

Billy is an Englishman who blends elements of folk music, punk rock and protest songs. His political and social views and actions are about as famous as his 20 year international musical career. So by attending this concert be prepared to be enlightened in many ways, that’s if you can locate tickets.
